The data show that mental health among ethnic minority youth deteriorated more in areas with stronger Leave support.
In addition, students rated SES, faculty rated refugee status, and practitioners rated sexual orientation as an area where they needed additional training (see Fig. 2c). The terms domain captured whether the intervention used culturally relevant metaphors, phrases, stories, or words. Once all articles and interventions were coded, the two team members who completed data extraction met to review the qualitative descriptive notes recorded and identified similar patterns within each domain. The study was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to the first author.
Language barriers and limited health literacy further compound these issues. The LGBTQ+ community, particularly those who are also racial or ethnic minorities, face compounded challenges. Native Americans and Alaska Natives experience serious psychological distress 2.5 times more than the general population. Asian Americans, often stereotyped as a “model minority,” face their own set of challenges. That’s a staggering gap in treatment.
